From Within

Wondering if he might ever leave,

That hollow cave he rests silently within.

Understanding it is safe;

Understanding it is reliable in its warmth.

And yet, there is a feverish longing,

For something else, something more.

The mouth, he dare not venture beyond.

From the silence, from its strangling embrace.

Into the light, into alien climates.

For it is a stride too far.

Though, he knows it must be taken one day.

And in the silence,

That he awaits.
